Did you know that there’s a porpoise called the vaquita is so endangered there are fewer than ten left in the entire world? That’s right—less than ten! The vaquita is a small, shy porpoise that lives in the Gulf of California (not the Gulf of Mexico, by the way).

You might be wondering, “Why don’t we keep them safe in aquariums?” Well, it’s not that simple. Vaquitas are super sensitive animals. When they get too stressed out by humans, it can actually harm or even kill them. Because of this, people have decided that it’s better to leave vaquitas in the wild and hope they can make a comeback.

So, why are vaquitas so endangered? It’s mostly because of illegal fishing. Fishermen often try to catch a fish called the totoaba, which also lives in the Gulf of California. Unfortunately, vaquitas sometimes get caught in the fishing nets by mistake. Instead of letting them go, some fishermen think, “Oh well, I can sell this too.” This is one of the main reasons why vaquitas are in such big trouble.
